Lilybandits were an Americana band from Columbus, Ohio. They formed in 1993 and broke up in 2001. Why should you care about an obscure Americana band from the 90s? Mostly because they wrote good songs. The Lilybandits made recordings that slotted neatly into the emergent Americana sub-genre. But the band stood out for crafting songs that were engaging without sounding trendy.

In other words, you, lover of music, will probably enjoy most if not all of these songs. They range from country to power pop to aggressive to beautiful. And even though these recordings were made well over 20 years ago they don’t really sound of their time.

If you are the kind of music nerd who wants to go deep on the history, The Lilybandits will be a compelling band to understand as being part of the formative years of a lasting sub-genre. They rubbed elbows with the likes of Wilco, The Jayhawks, and Drive-By Truckers, played such esteemed clubs as The 40 Watt and CBGB, and played SXSW in 1998

But really, it’s the songs. They wrote good songs and put a lot of effort into crafting them well.

They released two CDs. Shifty’s Tavern in 1995 and @ 33 1/3 in 1999. Shifty’s Tavern was initially self-released and then was reissued on Fundamental Recordings.
