Album: Jacob Tell – Hard To Be Human

Jacob Tell released his new album “Hard To Be Human” on January 15, and it plays like a steady, thoughtful collection rather than something chasing quick moments. The LA-based independent artist keeps things grounded from the start, focusing on songwriting and tone more than flash. It’s a warm record overall. Quiet confidence.

The opener, “Hard To Be Human” sets the mood right away with catchy melodies and gentle instrumentation that is carefully placed but not overworked. From there, “Zero Street” slows the pace, letting the vocals breathe while the background instrumentation does subtle but important work. There’s patience in how these songs unfold, and the album benefits from that restraint.

“You Know How This Ends” keeps things simple and soft, driven by strong vocals and clean melodic writing. That same controlled energy carries into “Cracks Appearing All Around” where the production choices are smart and intentional. Nothing here is trying to be bigger than it needs to be.

One of the clear highlights is “Cool As A Customer”. Acoustic guitar, honest writing, and a delivery that is direct and unforced. It just works. “Shutdown” follows with beautiful melodic touches and a steady instrumental foundation that keeps the album’s flow intact.

Later in the record, “I’m Not With Her” and “Slips Too Easy” stand out as two of the most memorable moments, both showing how well Jacob handles melody without overcomplicating things. “Trad Wife” strips things back further, putting more weight on the lyrics, while “So Much of the Time” brings in beautiful guitar work and especially strong vocal phrasing.

The closing track, “Names of the Dead” ends the album on a great note. It’s calm, reflective and emotionally clear.

Jacob’s voice is a big part of why this album holds together so well. Rich tone. Controlled delivery. The production stays supportive, the instrumentation is carefully shaped, and the songwriting quietly carries most of the weight. We honestly enjoyed sitting with this record. It’s warm and thoughtfully written.
