Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?
A: I’ve always admired music and how sounds can change emotions and influence the mind. But when I reached my teenage years I had a lot of anger inside of me and was being heavily medicated for it. I was admitted about 11 times in total to a psychiatric hospital as a teenager and missed quite a bit of high school due to the side effects of the medication. I felt very misunderstood at the time and began writing songs to get me through it. I’d experiment into the early hours of the morning writing songs and copying out information from books to remember. I played in a few bands and competitions and went on to study certificate 3 & 4 in Screen and Media.
Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Denacus”?
A: Writing songs has taught me so much about myself and I feel like I am just beginning to find my own sound. My music is probably driven by a lot of anger and sadness but it is a part of who I am. I’m going to keep working towards my goals and releasing new music in 2024 and beyond.
Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?
A: That’s a tough one to choose, there are so many really inspiring artists and I’m discovering new ones all the time but I find inspiration in life and it’s experiences mostly.
Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Dark Days.”?
A: I was going through some depression heading into the year of 2023 and then I lost a good friend to suicide. In the process of my grief, I wanted to write something that he and I would both be proud of or enjoy but also exposing my cycle of rage and despair from what had happened.
Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?
A: Dark.
Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Dark Days”?
A: I put a lot of pressure on myself with writing the lyrics. It took months of me looking at a blank computer screen before I was able to get it together. That was probably the most difficult challenge, getting started.
Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?
A: I think the message can be interpreted in many ways and that’s part of what I love about music, each person can find their own meaning for a song. But ultimately I hope that my music might help someone one day or inspire someone to write their own songs.
Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)
A: Jesus Christ.
Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?
A: If it’s your passion or it helps you then do it. It can be an expensive hobby though.
Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?
A: Believe in yourself.
