Conversation With Georgia Alexandra

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: Hi! I’m Georgia Alexandra and I’m a British singer-songwriter who writes pop/indie songs. I was born in Durham, UK and moved to Spain when I was 6 years old, and have grown up in Spain. However, the UK holds such a special place in my heart and I’m always going back every chance I get, and I absolutely love its music scene.

I grew up in a non-musical household and was always the one playing music and doing little performances all the time. I was never really surrounded by music so I created my own little musical world, discovering and learning everything I know about music all on my own.

From the age of 7 or 8 I just knew I wanted to be a singer/popstar or whatever little girls would call this career. It has always been incredibly clear to me, no matter how many setbacks or doubts regarding if it could ever happen. It all started with Hannah Montana and watching The X Factor UK on Saturday nights; and also a lot of Youtube videos of covers and live performances.

I would say I started writing when I was 16, but when I was younger, my mother used to send me to bed quite early, so I would lie there and make up songs in my head, and hum and sing random words. At 15, I got my first piano, and a little after I got a guitar and learned to play both instruments via Youtube and playing the chords to all of my favourite songs.

In 2020, I started collaborating with DJs and producers from all around the world and have gained millions of streams with those collaborations in the past couple of years. And although I’ll still continue with the collaborations, I’m now ready to embark on my own journey that I’ve been preparing for for what feels like forever.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Georgia Alexandra”?

A: I’m trying to share as much as possible and hopefully people might like my music and want to come on this journey with me. I’m also trying to find as many places as I can to perform and get my name out there. To me, fans are the most important and special thing. A tiny bit of support can help enormously.

As for the message I have for anyone about to discover Georgia Alexandra, I create music that will maybe resonate with you, songs with which you can feel happy, sad, or any other emotion, but hopefully you can find comfort in them and know you’re not alone; and the feelings you have are valid, and there’s other people who feel them too!

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: I would say Taylor Swift has been a constant one for a long time now. I love her artistry and how she goes about it. I get inspired by so so many artists though, and I think I take a little bit of every one and integrate it into my artistry. I have this thing where I obsess over a certain artist for a period of time and then go onto another, and so on, and by doing that I feel I really get to know the music that specific artist makes.

I find inspiration everywhere really. I mean, just the other day this phrase came into my mind, “heart set on leaving”, and I thought, oh this could be a cool concept, so I wrote it down in my “to write about” list. But basically, I write about real life occurrences and scenarios I make up in my head. When I write a song about something I’m feeling strongly about at that moment, it comes really easily to me.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Leave This Town Tonight.”?

A: I wrote Leave This Town Tonight in 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, which is quite ironic when you listen to the lyrics. It’s about the feeling of needing to leave a place, situation or person. I think so many of us have felt that way at one moment or another throughout our lives; the need to just run away from it all.

I would consider it a ballad and a sad song, but it also has this hopefulness and lightness to it. It’s sort of saying “it’s okay to do what you need to do”. I know there have been many times for me personally that I’ve felt guilty or wrong by doing what’s right for me, and this is me saying that it’s okay and even a good thing to do what’s right for you, to do what you need to.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: I don’t think I could describe it in one word because it’s not just one thing, but it’s pop/indie with a sprinkle of country and 2000s pop/rock; and you can definitely expect more than one ballad from me.

To paint a clearer picture, Olivia Rodrigo x The Fray x Fleetwood Mac.

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Leave This Town Tonight”?

A: Writing wise, the song came to me quite quickly, and there was no pressure because it was just my usual “let’s write and see what you can come up with today”. It was a few years ago now so, although I can’t remember exactly how it happened, I do recall it being super easy and all the words just sort of poured out. I think I wrote it in 10 minutes. I did rewrite some parts of the verses a little further down the line when I decided I might want to record and release it.

As for the recording process, I worked on the song with a producer from the UK called Josh Northwood, who I now consider a friend. We started working on it in summer and I went to the UK to record the vocals in September. I wouldn’t say there were any challenges recording wise either, it’s all hard work, but apart from that, nothing that stands out. It was actually my second time recording one of my songs in a studio! Now, getting the song to be heard, that’s a challenge in itself haha!

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: The most important thing to me is to touch people’s hearts with my music, whether it be a comfort song, a happy song they can dance to, a sad song they can cry to; just for it to be there for someone when they need it.

I have a lot of goals as an artist, some big and some small, but as for the main ones, I aspire to become a full time singer-songwriter, perform, tour the world, have a team and fans, make music constantly and consistently, and release singles, EPs and albums. Maybe even write for other people someday too!

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: Noah Kahan is definitely up there at the top of my list. I think he and his music are absolutely amazing. I’d also love to write a song with Caitlyn Smith, I think she’s amazing.

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: I’d say be completely true to yourself and create what feels right to you. The most important and special gift you have is that there’s no one else quite like you. It’s a hard path to take but if you truly want it, stick with it, give it time and fight for what you want.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Just go for it, everything you want to do, because you never know what doors will open. You might fail sometimes but that’s okay, because you’ll also succeed, and the times you do succeed are worth all the times you failed. Also, nobody’s going to want it for you like you want it for yourself, so in Taylor Swift’s words “you’re on your own kid”. Surround yourself with people who are on the same wavelength as you and trust the voice within you.
