Conversation With When In May

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: My name is Brett Fitzpatrick, I’m the lead singer to my favorite band, When In May. As for my childhood, I don’t think there’s a single lead singer who had a good childhood, otherwise I’d be a doctor or something.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “When In May”?

A: Get ready for your life to be a whole lot more cinematic. There is more beautiful music coming in 2024.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: Jack Antonoff is my most inspiring artist. He has worked with some of the best bands in the world, some of the best artists, and is an amazing producer. Inspiration can come from a lot of different sources, movies, poetry, art and most importantly music. I can’t pinpoint one thing I take inspiration from, it comes from the life around me and the world around me.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Cheap Red Wine.”?

A: Cheap Red Wine is a confession from my bedroom sexualizing the unattractive, and overall talking about being young, dumb and intoxicated.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: Cinematic.

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Cheap Red Wine”?

A: I couldn’t stop staring at my producer and their wife wouldn’t stop getting in the way.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: The goal is to become the best band in the world and be the best band to ever do it.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: Eddie Van Halen

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: Don’t do it if you have a mortgage.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Don’t stop in the middle, you can rest at the end.
