Conversation With Solarrio

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: I was born in Paris, France into a very musical family.  They’re all classical musicians, I kind of chose a different path but it’s still music at the end of the day.  So I guess it was instilled in me at a very young age and I’ve wanted to be a professional musician since I can remember.

Q: Did you have any formal training, or are you self-taught?

A: I took piano and guitar lessons for a few years, so I have some formal training and understand music theory.  When I got into production, synthesizers and samplers I kind of started learning by doing.

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences, and why the name ‘Solarrio’?

A: One of my firat and biggest influences to this day is Phil Collins.  Prince, Rick James, most of the soul/RNB music from the 1970s and 1980s.  The name Solarrio comes from an inside joke, but it sounded so cool

I stuck with it.

Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Forever’. Is there a story behind it?

A: I had the instrumental lying around on my drive for about a decade.  I wrote the song with Craig Walker, however this particular one went through a lot of changes.  I think we re-wrote the chorus 3 or 4 times.  We wanted to write a smooth, groovy track about holding on to those special moments in life.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: My debut album “All the Wrong Places” is scheduled for a spring 2024 release.  And plenty more music after that!

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: My aim is to create catchy, groovy, timeless music.  My sound is heavily inspired by 80’s Pop & R&B and I’m trying to bring back that feeling that I feel is missing in a lot of today’s music.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: The answer to that can change daily! Haha

On good days it’s definitely a high like none other, on the bad days it can get pretty dark…

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: I’ll usually start with the instrumental.  Then try to come up with a topline melody and then find the right words.  Sometimes when I’m in a session with other writers we’ll have more of a thematical concept.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: Lota of ups and downs in my career, nothing I really want to get into here, but I’ll say the pandemic hit me hard just like everyone else.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: I’m really proud of my debut album “All the Wrong Places” and the record company we launched earlier this year (Playel Records).
