Conversation With Josh Alexander

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: I’m originally from Quebec City. Back in my hometown I used to watch all the singing competition shows and dream of one day taking on grand stages like that. When I was in elementary school I participated in multiple talent shows and then went on to join a music concentration program when I got to high school. It was while in highschool that I really found a love for my art and I haven’t stopped creating and singing since.

Q: Congratulations on winning the Grand Prize in the Canada’s Walk of Fame RBC Emerging Musician Program! How does it feel to be recognized for your talent in such a significant way?

A: Thank you so much. I’m truly honoured to have been named the grand prize winner of this program. All I want in my life is to share my messages of love and my truth and to know that my music, stories and voice touched the board of Canada’s walk of fame and RBC is truly a win. I can’t wait to one day be singing my songs with crowds of people across the world.

Q: Can you tell us more about your experience participating in the Canada’s Walk of Fame RBC Emerging Musician Program?

A: It’s a wonderful program that’ll give me so many opportunities in the coming times. December 2nd will mark my first appearance as the grand prize winner. I will be singing at the 25th anniversary of Canada’s Walk of Fame. I can’t wait!

Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Keep On Giving The Love’. Is there a story behind it?

A: It’s a song I wrote and composed with a couple of friends of mine, Charles Guay, Jay Kutcher and Daayan. Surrounded by people that I love and admire, I thought it would be fitting to write a wonderful song of love and spread it around with those lovely people. I grew up being a happy kid who always thought that everyone was nice. When reality hit I realized that not everyone would be kind. So I wanted to create a song for my younger self, that would help spread the message of love and kindness towards ourselves and others.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: let’s just say I’m currently in a wonderful creative zone. So stay tuned 😉

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: I call my music, Cinematic Pop. I’ve always loved soundtracks, and the beautiful progressions in the songs. I always enjoyed that throughout the soundtracks there would be different genres. I want to bring that into my music. Different types of genres, but always keeping my voice as the main instrument leading the music. When my listeners listen to my songs, I want them to know that the melodies come from inside of me and are instinctive compositions. I create what feels right.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: It really does. I only release music that evokes a certain emotion in me. If I don’t feel it, I don’t release it. I want my music to come from a real place in order for my listeners to connect with me and themselves. I want to follow you along in all of your movie moments of the day. Even on your darker days, I want songs that’ll help you through those tough times.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: I always start by composing melodies. I’ll record myself on the mic and freestyle a Melody over music or without music and usually the first go at it is what I’ll use to write my song. Once the Melodie’s are there, the lyrics and the music follow.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: I would definitely say that moving away from home to follow my dream in the big city of Montreal was the toughest challenge to overcome, but also the beginning of such a beautiful journey. I’m the eldest of 5 siblings and leaving them behind and my parents wasn’t an easy task. It was good for me though, because it gave me the strength to figure things out on my own.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: I just came off a huge tour with French superstar Zaz. Having her choose me to open for her tour and sing for over 15,000 people is something I’ll never forget. She’s the first artist who gave me a shot as a performer and I’ll be forever grateful to her.
