German–Paraguayan singer-songwriter Laura Brizuela recently graced the music scene with her infectious new single, “Right Cheek,” which dropped on September 15, 2023 via Embassy of Music. In this disco-tinged track, Brizuela’s signature style seamlessly blends with a profound message of self-acceptance and the liberation from the expectations of others.
Laura Brizuela, known for her ability to merge style and substance, embarked on a mission to break free from the confines of society’s expectations and encourage listeners to do the same. Her creative journey led to the birth of “Right Cheek.” The song serves as an empowering anthem that celebrates individuality, self-acceptance, and the triumph of staying true to oneself.
Brizuela reveals the inspiration behind the single, saying, “Inspired by my personal journey of growth, the song celebrates the beauty of embracing one’s true self without the need to conform to others’ expectations. I have wanted to write a song about this topic for a long time, and the creation of ‘Right Cheek’ came rather easily to me.”
The creation of the song had a spontaneous and organic beginning. Brizuela recalls, “I was walking through my apartment and heard Matheo playing around with the accordion in the studio. Suddenly the chorus melody came to my mind along with the lyrics, and I just started singing it.”
The catchy chorus encapsulates the song’s message: “Yeah, you can kiss me on my right cheek / If you like me and if you don’t / That’s also cool with me.” It radiates a sense of self-confidence, resilience, and unapologetic individuality.
“Right Cheek” beautifully encapsulates the transition from seeking external validation to reveling in self-approval. The smooth vocals and infectious melody resonate deeply with listeners, inspiring them to shed societal expectations and dance to the beat of their own hearts. For Brizuela, this single serves as a powerful reminder that embracing one’s individuality and living authentically is the path to true happiness and fulfillment.
She explains, “Right Cheek was such an easy project! The idea literally just popped up in my brain when I heard my producer Matheo play some keys. I always wanted to write a song like that. It’s about freeing yourself from opinions and expectations of other people and embracing who you are, even if it means that people might not like you. I wanted it to be playful, celebrating, and easy to sing along. My journey wasn’t always easy; I often felt like I wasn’t fitting in or that I was too much. I know that it can be rough to feel like you’re not enough just the way you are, and that’s why I wanted to write a song that celebrates uniqueness.”
Laura Brizuela’s musical journey began in an unexpected way. Raised in Lemgo, Bielefeld, with Paraguayan parents, she stumbled upon her passion for music at the tender age of eight. It was during a school performance where she played Mary and sang a solo in a Christmas musical that she had a profound realization: “THAT’s what I was born for!”
Despite this early revelation, it took time for Brizuela to fully commit to her musical destiny. After serious soul-searching at a Bible college in California, she finally decided to focus on singing and songwriting in 2019. This decision led to her meeting her producer, Matheo Diaz, and subsequently marrying him.
Since then, Brizuela has released a steady stream of new tracks and her “Sanguine EP,” gaining recognition from music critics and fans alike. Her unique blend of soulful R&B and pop hybrid has earned her praise from publications like Clout, The Honey POP, and Speed On The Beat.
Now, with her signing to Embassy of Music in December 2022, Laura Brizuela’s brand new single, “Right Cheek,” serves as an anthem of empowerment and individuality, reminding us all that embracing our uniqueness is the key to living life to the fullest.
