Conversation With Caleb Wiler

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: Yes! I’m a music artist and producer originating from Wilmington, NC. Starting from my childhood onward music and songwriting have always gone hand in hand. I started out playing metal music at a very young age, then grew into a conversion of an admiration for all genres of music. I love the way it connects with the world and its relationships within the diversities that make it up.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Caleb Wiler”?

A: I’ve been becoming a frequenter at the local bars and venues around my hometown, as well as staying in close proximity with social platforms! My music is available on all platforms and I try my best to sustain new fresh sounds and a memorable authenticity within my art. A message for my listeners or first time inhibitors would be that they take my music into a deep, sentimental value. It’s as close to me as I wish it could be to them as well. In fact, I find it more important that they can find escape and dimension within my songs and what they mean. Music has the power of being ambiguous, as well as a form of religion when we first fall in love with it.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: My most inspiring artist at the moment is folk songwriter Jim Croce, his music has really touched me in a universal way lately and I’ve been on a train. I usually find inspiration from rhythms or Melody’s that pop into my head. I believe it stems from the many years of varying my musical ear repertoire. The first step is usually music first on my acoustic guitar, then I translate the lyrics to what fits the mood onto paper. It’s a pretty common formula for me!

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Takin’ Me Down.”?

A: “Takin’ Me Down” is one of those songs that I wrote in a very troublesome time in my life. It’s very honest and relevant.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: My sound is a unique take on what I like to call “Acoustic-Alternative”, I typically prefer to leave my various sound to the audience as far as it’s defining goes.

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Takin’ Me Down”?

A: this single was one of those special songs that I heard before writing it, it was like an utterly free-flowing theme and distinctiveness in my mind that I had to match perfectly. So getting the electric guitars and acoustics backed up was a huge lengthy process, I tend to spend an incredibly long time on the mixing process so I can align the raw recorded sound with what I had heard it as in my head. Sometimes that can take a couple minutes and others it takes weeks upon months. This was the type that took several months!

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: The general message I like to portray for a majority of my songs is that nothing is impossible. Whether it’s a struggle that’s taken you under or a dream that will guide you over it’s entirely up to you, a perseverant mindset is the key to the gates of all happiness. My goals as an artist are to be better with finding this key within myself as well, and to become more dedicated and promising to myself as a musician and a writer. I hope along the way people will be able to find release and the exact same purpose that I find within my music.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: There’s so many! Though if I could collaborate with any artists it would have to be Jim Morrison. Such a well acclaimed vocalist and underrated poet, I’ve read countless works and nothing compares. He was filled with such mystery and intelligence that nobody has ever hit me harder as an artist myself. His music and poetry are as fascinating and unexplainably accurate in terms of the world and philosophy, I feel we could have created some great things together if I was ever endeavored with the chance!

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: stay committed! Don’t give up no matter what. There’s so many musicians who feel there’s an age bracket for being an artist and it’s so important to know that’s not the answer. When it’s your time it’s your time, shoot some artists didn’t make it until they were in their 30’s! Stay perseverant and if you do it for the passion and sedative, the financial benefits come close after. Again don’t give it up, it’s never too late and you’re never too old!

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: That variety is key, I used to be a stubborn elitist when it came to music. I felt nothing outside my roots of metal was worth it and I was completely filled with speculation. There’s a reason every genre has a following, and some are more shaped than others but that doesn’t mean there isn’t talent and diversity! Music is a form of religion and it’s very easy to become hypocritical. All genres I’ve found have their interesting magic, and unique essence that fills a room full of people to become friends. Think of it as space itself, how many galaxies have we discovered and have yet to? So many and such little time, I wish I had taken the chance to listen to all genres sooner! Though I’m glad I know now.
