Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?
A: I am originally from Portsmouth England, but built my music career once I had moved to Norwich England. I had always loved music and started writing songs in my head when I was little. I hadn’t really thought to take it all much further until I discovered the band “My Chemical Romance”. Their theatrical approach to modern rock really resonated with me. That’s when I knew I had to do the same.
Q: And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?
A: Lately I have been in such a pop punk faze. From ‘Sleeping With Sirens’ to my favourite band ‘Waterparks’.
Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences, and why the name ‘The Marijanovic’?
A: I had always listened to a lot of 90s/80s bands from ‘Depeche Mode’ to ‘Placebo’. The name ‘The Marijanovic’ originates from my Serbian heritage as ‘Marijanovic’ was my grandmother’s maiden name.
Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Butterfly Feeling’. Is there a story behind it?
A: So with a ‘Butterfly Feeling’ I wanted to express the feeling of control and power within a relationship. The actual musicality is a love letter to all the rock ballads I grew up listening to.
Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?
A: Yes! So I am currently working on my second EP after the huge success of my first EP ‘Chaos’. The next EP centres around classic rock and a different style of music from me and my band.
Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
A: I am usually labelled as a goth rock artist but in my opinion labels are just to make life easier. I like to incorporate lyrics to make the audience think with theatrical catchy musicality to accompany my words.
Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?
A: This might sound a bit cliche but even if 1 person enjoys the music I make then the hard work is worth it. The feeling of people singing your lyrics back at you at live shows makes every ounce of the struggle and tough times worth it.
Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?
A: It depends on the song. I usually like to freestyle lyrics on chord progression I write on my piano. Then I show my band and we go from there. A song could take 3 hours from nothing to fully mixed and mastered or it could take 2 years like ‘Butterfly Feeling’.
Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
A: The balance of real work, social life and music has always been a struggle. I like to put my all into everything I do and trying to find a way to put my all into everything sometimes can be challenging.
Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?
A: There are a few moments that come to mind. The first time I sold out my local venue. The first time someone got my song tattooed on them. The first song I released hitting 1k streams. All small achievements that mean so much to me.
