Conversation With Teacher of the Year

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: my childhood was very sports driven, but I always had music around me. I was always encouraged to take up instruments, but sport was my childhood. I think I was always very rhythmic and coordinated, and fortunately when I started to pay attention to music, it was a smooth segue.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover Teacher of the Year?

A: We just try and write music with no pressure, good energy and vibes, some slight darkness lyrically and all in all, just trying to impress our dads.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: most inspiring artist for me right now…wow, that is difficult. I would say any artist that can convey emotion, can tell a story and has that fire within them excites me. Cory Wells, NF, Ollie, The Devil Wears Prada, Nothing Nowhere, Young Lions inspire me. Inspiration for me when it comes to writing lyrics is all situationally based. Events that happen or thoughts that pop into my head. I feel so empowered to tell my story through this artform. Even if I am very new and have limited skills so far.

Q: You just released your debut EP, “Greatest Hits”. What inspired the writing and recording processes for this EP?

A: this was just a ridiculous series of events which results in 7 recorded tracks in 8 weeks. 5 of them were already written, 2 of them were essentially built in the studio. It was the most fun of process and songs I guess the irony lies in us labelling it our greatest hits when we are just starting out. Banter and laughs were a key ingredient. Calculated risk for instance looks into the ideals of getting out of a monotonous way of living by challenging yourself. Embracing the dark thoughts and leaving your comfort zone.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: Catchy Garage Rock

Q: Is there a possible album being worked on? Any tea to spill on the release date or name?

A: Definitely lots in the work, looking at dropping an 8 track album by the end of the year…lots and lots of ideas, just trying to make it all come together at the moment.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: Main message will probably start to be clearer lyrically when new stuff starts to drop, but in its simplest form, we challenge lots of things. Mental health and wellbeing, embracing your individuality and celebrating your feelings. Our goals are probably to one day play a show! HAHA and basically just be creative and have fun with mates, what more can you ask for?

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: Dream artist to collaborate with… that is a great question. For me personally, it would probably be Sam Carter from Architects. Raw emotion, talent, passion, complete mastery of his craft. Incredibly humble and giving human. His voice would never fit our music, but it would be bants.

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: As the newbie, I feel like the best advice I’ve been given is that “it takes time, practice and confidence” to get better and that music is imperfectly perfect. Embrace the experience and you will reap the benefits are they seem fit.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Don’t play soccer so I can avoid two knee reconstructions? No, in all honestly, I wouldn’t give myself any advice. If I could go back to a younger time I would just watch. I live every day as it comes and learn and grow with every opportunity. To go back and change that would limit my potential more nature growth.
