Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?
A: Hello! I’m an artist based in Liverpool UK. I started learning guitar as a teenager and then became completely obsessed with writing songs. It was (and still is) a way for me to express myself. I guess that’s how it all started really!
Q: And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?
A: My favourite artists are Big Thief, Wet Leg, Julia Jacklin, Muna. I always listen to Muna when I get ready for a gig because they get me hyped up haha!
Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences?
A: I used to listen to classic songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. I feel like they really had an influence in my earlier song writing.
Q: You have just released your new EP, ‘Something In Your Teeth’. Is there a story behind it?
A: I like to think this EP is a story about growing into woman hood. Each song offers a different perspective of what it’s like to be a woman in your twenties, learning to speak your mind, and figure out who you are.
Q: What is the message of your music?
A: My recent songs have had a feminist perspective as I write about experiencing ‘mansplaining’ and asking people to stop telling me what to do. Overall the songs are about what I experience in life and then sometimes I exaggerate that for effect! I hope the messages relate to some people.
Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
A: The key elements to my music include: honest lyrics, soft vocals, driving drums and soaring guitar parts. I would describe my sound as Indie/alternative rock.
Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?
A: This past year has been amazing, working on my EP and playing live with my band. I’m proud of where I’m at as it’s taken a lot of work to get here but I have loads of goals I’d like to achieve. I’s like my music to reach more listeners, and I’d like to play bigger gigs, and one day play a tour and festivals.
Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?
A: It usually starts with a lyric idea that might have been brewing up for a while. Then I sit with my guitar and play around with some chords until something clicks. I then often write the song with guitar and vocals at the same time. Sometimes this is a really short process as it just flows out and sometimes it takes a bit more time. Then I take the song to my band and we build up the arrangement together. Huge shout out to my band mates George Higgins- bass, Sam Pierpoint- drums and Jay Taylor- guitar. They have brought so much to my music over the past year.
Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
A: It can be a struggle to balance everything as an independent artist with the way the industry is now. You have to be able to do about ten different jobs at the same time. There have been moments when this has been completely overwhelming.
Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?
A: To be honest, this EP feels really significant and I have never been this proud of anything in my life. The songs feel so authentically me and I’ve managed this whole project from start to finish on my own. It’s pretty amazing (If I do say so myself) !
