Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?
A: I was born in Munich, Germany. I asked for my first drum kit shortly after hearing ‘Back in the USSR’ by The Beatles when I was about 4.
I’m not sure I had a career in mind (or knew what that was), but I was clear that I had to do this. Drumming and making music has been my lifeboat ever since.
Q: Did you have any formal training, or are you self-taught?
A: Both. I learned a lot by just doing, but also had the good fortune of attending the Percussion Institute of Technology in Hollywood, California.
Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences, and why the name ‘The Lunar Keys’?
A: The Beatles, AC/DC and The Police. Why The Lunar Keys? First off, we plain and simply liked the sound of it. THE LUNAR KEYS! To add further meaning: The moon has a big influence on key areas of our lives (the tides, our moods, navigation to name but a few). So, in that sense the name harbours the hope that our music will positively influence and affect our listeners.
Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Life is a Dirty War’. Is there a story behind it?
A: The song is a play on the expression ‘All is fair in Love & War’ and deals with being in a bad relationship whilst facing life’s daily struggles but not surrendering, likening the experience to being in a war.
I won’t live like that no more – I’ve escaped from this before – You can’t break me to the core – Life is a Dirty War.
Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?
A: Absolutely. Keep an eye on our socials….
Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
A: We’re a rock band that passionately craft heartfelt songs with a classic timeless feel and a contemporary twist. The comments people leave on YouTube give a good insight in what resonates with our listeners: The Lunar Keys – Life Is A Dirty War (Official Video) – YouTube <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1om5YqSOhQ>
Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?
A: Music is our saviour. To be doing what you love doing is a privilege in itself, but to then be able to share that love with others and see and feel that they love it too RRRocks in a very big way.
Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?
A: JC, our singer and bass player, has too many tunes inside of his psyche not to be in this band and he often gets the ball rolling. We then knock his ideas into shape collectively – be it in rehearsal or on our DAWs – until everyone’s smiling. It’s a collaborative process in which we all play our part.
Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
A: I don’t do difficult. I only have to watch the news to remind myself how incredibly lucky I am. Some days suck, yes, but my bigger picture is bright.
Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?
A: The positive impact that my actions or music have on myself and others. This is work in progress and I’m a little too young to take stock just yet.
