ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Amber Nicholson’s desire to make music is stirred by both passion and purpose. That’s hardly surprising; she first started playing piano at age five and originally intended to become a concert pianist. Over the course of her career, she became a critically acclaimed singer and songwriter who’s not only committed to share her skills by performing in and around her hometown of Fulshear Texas, but also to educate others .
Formerly the lead singer and front person for a budding indie outfit, Amber has now stepped out on her own with her striking new EP, tellingly-titled Far Away Dreaming. Co-produced by Amber and Jacob Meador — who also engineered — at Orchestrate Sound in Needville, Texas, it boasts five original songs penned by Amber that run a gamut of emotion veering from a casual caress to sultry sensuality.
In each of the five offerings that make up the EP, Amber courageously bares her soul from a personal perspective, sharing her most profound emotions about love, loss and perseverance. It’s a decidedly candid set of songs, but one that will resonate with anyone who’s found the will to persevere in order to temper desire with disappointment and hope with happenstance.
She cites Aretha Franklin, Norah Jones,Allen Toussaint, Allison Krauss, Gram Parsons, Sue Foley, Regina Spektor, Little Willie John, and Lee Dorsey among those that influenced her efforts.
Set for release on February 24, 2023, Far Away Dreaming features Amber on piano and vocals, Nolan Burke on guitar, Randy Well on organ, bassist Dan Smith, cellist Aimee Norris, and drummer Tyson Sheth.
The EP will be preceded by the release of its first single, “Far Far Far,” on January 27. Amber’s lilting piano and calming caress reflects the need to sometimes put the past behind and go forward alone. The song is flush with resolve and resilience, and when Amber sings …the next time I fall in love I won’t stay upon a shelf… because the person I became is someone far, dar, far….away from you.
The pensive “Oh (Where Are You)” shares a similar sentiment. “It takes awhile to mourn the future that you once hoped to share together,” Amber says in summing up its musical mantra.
Likewise, the soothing and seductive “Heart To Stone” conveys a similar sense of desire and determination. “There’s a feeling of relief and freedom that comes when you find the courage to move on,” Amber insists, and it’s that sense of liberation which informs the song overall.
The sultry blues of “That I Believe” casts a defiant tone, bringing the EP to a triumphant conclusion as Amber asserts the fact that she’ll always remain true to her self and her convictions.
In many ways, then, Far Away Dreaming is the culmination of a lifetime spent making music in various environs. She began her musical journey in middle school singing in the school choir, and subsequently branched out to participate in traditional choirs and show choirs in her hometown while in high school. Although she had initially been interested in pursuing classic music, she opted to turn her attention to more contemporary sounds and began picking up guitar in addition to piano.
Once in college at the University of North Texas, Amber began studying jazz vocal music, an imprint that continues to resonate in her songs and style. She began singing professionally in local clubs and lounges as well various cover bands with whom she toured the Southwest and Canada. After co-founding the indie band Relick, she recorded several albums and EPs before making the brave decision to establish a solo career.
Not surprisingly, Amber’s been cited for her skills and reaped the kudos of critics nationwide.
No Depression once said of her, “Nicholson’s voice carries the day. Her delightful and charming voice seamlessly fits Relick’s retro musical style. Her Jazz training clearly prepared her, more than she probably realized at the time…”
Magnet described her as “A little bit retro with a whole lot of soul” Nevertheless, it’s best left to Amber herself to sum up her stance.
“I make music because it’s a safe place to let myself go,” she insists. Music helps release to the world and the people that are nearest me. I see it as a way to contribute to my community, as both an artist and individual.
