Conversation With Saint Aubin

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A:  I grew up in Indiana, my family would sing and play instruments. I didn’t want to be an accountant and stand up comedy seemed too lonely. So, I figured I’d start a band, be surrounded with friends and play music. All my band mates left me and now I am solo, so jokes on me.

Q: And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?

A: Dijon, John Moreland, Brockhampton, comedians Andrew Schulz, Bill Burr, Shane Gillis

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences?

A: The Chariot, Dustin Kensrue, The Black Keys

Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Tomorrow’. Is there a story behind it?

A:  Tomorrow is about the love/hate relationship with moving on. You are hopeful about it, but afraid of forgetting the past.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: yes, this is part of a 6 song EP that will come out in February. After that, I’ll be doing singles for awhile.

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: I think I write good melodies. People resonate with good melodies. I usually describe my sound as eclectic good music. Even if I tell them something cool, they probably won’t listen to it.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: I get a ton of fulfillment from writing, producing, mixing and podcasting. But I am cursed so I always want more. I want to be able to reach more people. So yes and no? I know, I need more therapy.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: most if my song ideas come when it’s the most inconvenient to record. So i usually do a voice memo on the toilet or whispering during a funeral. I write 80% of the song in my head and then after 3 months of video games and procrastination I hit record. Most of the time the idea sucks, but I find a nugget and develop that idea. Then boom, a banger.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A:  I lost my mom last year. Definitely don’t recommend. Good material for songs, though.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: Someone Shazammed my song in New York. The little things, baby.
