Conversation With subduxtion

Ground-breaking DJ and music producer subduxtion keeps aiming high and delivering powerful releases in a constant basis.
His signature style and sound are showcased throughout his impressive catalog, and definitely puts his name high on the list of DJs to follow. His love for darker and minimalist sounds with hard-hitting beats and bass lines are displayed on his latest release ‘Rezone’; and while he keeps working on upcoming releases, projects and mixes for his weekly radio show ‘Dark Signals Radio’, we found time to sat down with him to talk about ‘Rezone’, the inspiration behind it, his hopes for the release and some advice for music production beginners.

Hi subduxtion, how are you?

I’m doing well, thank you very much. It’s been a very busy month with the release of both my remix of Sizz Nickhrome’s track, ‘That Eskimo’s Coat’ as well as the release of ‘Rezone’. Not to mention doing my weekly radio show, ‘Dark Signals Radio’; I have to admit I like months like this!

‘Rezone’ is out now, what inspired this track?

I’d say the biggest inspiration for the track was all the new music I was listening to as I was putting together my radio show. I heard so many really well produced and arranged tracks that when I went into the studio, I was heavily inspired to make my tracks sound as good as what I was hearing others do. Even though I was heavily inspired by what others were doing, it was very important to me that I still retain my sound and my approach. There’s so much good music being made it can be easy to get lost in what others are doing so it’s imperative that you filter that inspiration through yourself and not get caught in the trap of straight imitating what you’re listening to.

What elements of this track would you say showcase the ‘subduxtion sound’?

My love of atmospheric/noirish pads, driving basslines and heavy drums are really the core elements of the “subduxtion sound”.

Which part of the track did you start with first?

As the track took months to go from initial inspiration to completion, I think I started with underlying chord progression and built the track from there.

What feedback have you received from this release?

So far, the response has been really, really positive! There are a number of DJ’s playing both ‘Rezone’ and the second track from the release, ‘Sand and Sky’.

Can you describe this track in one sentence?

A dark, energetic Melodic-Techno track.

Which artists are now on high rotation for you?

Dmitry Molosh, Jamie Stevens, Lena Storm and Guy J. All of them are getting significant time on ‘Dark Signals Radio’. Many of their tracks have a darker, more minimal approach to Progressive House and/or Melodic Techno which is exactly what I’m looking for.

What new tips do you have for aspiring fellow music producers out there?

My biggest advice is, never stop learning and listening. I’m always reading articles or watching videos regarding music production. Music production has a long history and there are so many people who were doing it before I started, why would I not take advice from them? You don’t need to copy what they’re doing but there’s always some little bit of information that you can glean from them that will make your productions better. Never stop listening to music and listen to a wide variety of music, not just the music that you produce. Bringing “outside” influences will only help to give you a unique “sound”.

What would you like to achieve with this new release?

You have to have tangible goals with a release. You can’t let yourself get caught up in likes and plays. Doing that will drive you crazy! With every release, my goal is the same, which is to keep developing the “sound” of subduxtion. Every time that I work on a new track and ultimately a new release, I’m consciously working on improving my arrangement and production skills. So, I guess what I hope to achieve is real improvement and growth as an artist and a musician. If I can hear myself getting better than I’ve achieved what I set out to achieve.

What’s coming up for subduxtion?

What’s next? I’ve been contemplating this for the last month or so. I think what’s next is a couple of things, I want to release at least one EP and have releases with labels that I have not previously had a release with. Doing an EP is high on my list as I would like to explore a release that’s more than two-tracks or a single. That longer form release would allow me to showcase the entirety of the “subduxtion sound”.
