Conversation With Pink films

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A:  sure, I come from a small town near Winchester UK, and that’s where playing music and collaborating with other musicians started; this was mainly in school and college. I started off by playing in a couple of bands with some close friends. The bands were called ‘OKcorrel’ and ‘Fabrics’ we enjoyed local success and played a few sold out shows for BBC introducing in reading, and some shows in London.

Q: And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?

A: recently I’ve been listening you a smorgasbord of different styles of music, it doesn’t really stay on one style for long when it comes to new music. I’ve been really into the Stranger Things series and I’ve been listening to a lot of the soundtrack/score of the show.

I’m a big fan of artists like Matt Corby and Ben Howard.. I guess that’s where the lower tone in my singing in inspired. I’m a keen Vinyl collector, and there’s nothing that I enjoy more than to find a classic LP and slap in of the deck. My most recent purchase was ‘ Talking Heads – Remain in light’ amazing album.

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences, and why the name ‘Pink films’?

A: Since I can remember the first band that sticks to my brain is Fleetwood Mac, my dad would play ‘Rumours and ‘Tango in the night’ to death and I didn’t hate that. When I first started playing music seriously it was the indie scene in 2007-2009 that really inspired my playing. The name ‘Pink Films’ has a loose origin to be quite honest, I’m a avid skateboarder and there’s a mini skate video called ‘La Ville Rosé’ by SOLO skateboarding magazine meaning ‘The Pink City’. I just liked the aesthetic that it gave, and I just chose films because who doesn’t like a good film.

Q: You have just released your new EP, ‘FROM THE TOP FLOOR’. Is there a story behind it?

A: After moving from Winchester ways to Brighton I wanted to start writing music solo. I liked the idea of being able to compose every part on my own and seeing if I could record it all as well. I started messing around with sounds and styles and I fell onto something I really liked the sound of and that was the start of my song ‘Turquoise’. A lot of the EP was recorded in the spare room of my top floor flat in Brighton facing the big blue! So that’s the name.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: At the moment I’m recording and writing more music, I don’t have a plan for a full length album at the moment but definitely a few more singles to come! I’ve got a band together and we will start rehearsing soon for a debut show in Brighton!

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: I think that obviously music is subjective and everyone will take bits of it it that they like or don’t like too much, but with this EP I think it  works really well as an whole piece of work from start to end. I wanted to take the listener on a journey through nice drum beats, ear candy guitar tones and nothing over the top with vocals.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: I’m definitely getting an out of the end product as much as I was creating it. The best thing about recording your own music is that when you have parts recorded; you can bounce down that project and that it away and listen. I would do this religiously and save it to files on my phone, I would usually go sit on the beach and listen over and over and try to write some words.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: depends on the track really, I could have an idea for a bass line that I feel would go really nice with a 4 to the floor beat, or I would start with a guitar part that I had been tinkering with and see where I would take me, usually somewhere rubbish but it would get better haha.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: My dad passed away 2 years ago suddenly, and it really knocked me on my head, a lot of what the EP is about is Inspired by him. The interlude ‘1965’ is a song I wrote for my dad and it’s his birth year.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: I think completing this 6 track EP has been the highlight of my music journey so far! I had a few CDs made and I felt bizarre to hold something in my hand that I created.
