Conversation With The Colour

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?
A:
I started in middle school, I have an older sister and one of her friends had a home recording studio, I gave it a try and started rapping and I turned out to have a good starting point I guess, they were impressed and liked the voice, I got better as I kept making songs and haven’t stopped since.

Q: Did you have any formal training, or are you self-taught?
A:
Mostly self-taught, YouTube helped a lot with the singing.

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences, and why the name ‘The Colour’?
A:
From when I was about 6 years old, I watched Micheal Jacksons’ movie titled Moon Walker on VCR. I watched it every single day after school when I got home. Later I started falling in love with music from Sade, Out Kast, Linkin Park, The Gorrilaz and Eminem. The name “The Colour ” comes from the fact music is described as painting with sound and that colour is the most important element when painting. I have lyrics in a song where I say “…please show me a masterpiece without The Colour, does it exist?…”, I’ve listened to a multitude of genres so my experience with music has been quite “colourful”, so I’ve just been running with that.

Q: Is there a story behind your latest release, “Amazing.”?
A:
I wouldn’t say that there’s a story, but more of a mood or state of mind that I wanted to capture through the song. From my experience with the competitive nature among rappers, there’s a certain pleasure when you instill fear in other rappers due to being incredible at your craft. I just loved how ominous and foreboding the beat was so as much as I was singing for the most part on the track, I couldn’t help but want to capture the spirit of that competitiveness and boost ones confidence.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?
A:
Most definitely! I’m glad you asked, I’m currently working on an album, very different from the one. The last album I made was purely RnB but I’m going to be focused on rapping for the next one.

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?
A:
I’d say romance has been the overarching theme in most of my recent projects, soundwise I’d describe it as airy, sometimes very tranquil but the same air can become a tornado.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfilment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?
A:
From a craftsmanship perspective, I think I’m hitting the mark I’m aiming for and I can hear improvements project after project but there are always lessons learned to do even better the next time.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?
A:
I usually start with instrumentation, whatever feeling I get from it would give me ideas of what to write about. I’m inspired by the beat more than anything else. When I did my Rnb album “Tempo” I didn’t write lyrics on anything, I just went into the studio and recorded parts of the song, as time passes I’ll go in and out of the studio to record the remaining parts until I finish, it could be a process lasting weeks and sometimes months.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?
A:
Trusting the process is the most difficult thing to endure, as artists we all want our break because you’re swimming in a pool of rejection and it feels like you’re constantly gasping for air hoping to at least find a buoy to pull yourself out.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?
A:
I haven’t stopped swimming, and I’ve come to understand the importance of the failures and joys on the journey.
