A Conversation With Mentum

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: We come from Oslo, Norway. We’ve been doing something musically for as long as we can remember – Finn mostly singing and writing and Tim producing and DJing.

Q: And what other artists have you found yourself listening to lately?

A: Tory Lanez, Post Malone, Majid Jordan, GASHI, 6LACK

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences, and why the name ‘Mentum’?

A: John Mayer, Daft Punk, Swedish House Mafia. We randomly came across a latin word for beard (or jaw) and thought it sounded pretty cool. Also it’s part of the word “momentum”, which is something we strive to be in on our musical journey.

Q: You have just released your new single, ‘Time’. Is there a story behind it?

A: Time is about realising that every single little thing in your life – positive or negative – is part of who you shape into as a person, and have helped you to become who you are today, and by extension, embracing the idea that if you could turn back time, you would do it all over again with zero remorse. We’ve realised in our own lives that hardship can play an important and positive role if you’re just open to see the potential benefits. You’re ultimately the captain of your own ship.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: We’ll definitely release lots of singles, one after the other. And potentially gather them up in various EP’s which reflects different phases of our musical journey. Our dream is of course to release a full album down the line.

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: Synergy of diverse musical impulses framed within a contemporary pop sound.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: The energy it gives us when we’re writing a song we ourselves love is unmatched. That feeling is priceless, and the main reason why we continue doing this. We’re also on a mission to succeed worldwide and to achieve both creative fulfillment and economical freedom doing what we love, and have always loved since we were kids. We want to emotionally connect to other people through our music, and hopefully contribute to making something that is appreciated by the world.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: Both of us start with writing the instrumental part of a song. After this, Finn starts coming up with vocal ideas and melodies. After that the lyrics are the main focus.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: Probably the letdowns, and not achieving our expectations with for instance a song. But from that, we’ve learned to not focus on expectations, and stay in it – no matter what – because our firm belief in what we’re capable of and the fire inside us will not die.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: Every song we finish is a success in of itself, but we’re still on our way to achieving our big career highlights. We’re proud to still be moving forward and getting better. Every hint of progression is a success, and as long as we feel our progress, there is still reason to continue.
