Arms & Armour have released “Chafe”, a new single that comes from their long-running work in Cleveland. The duo of Lauren Voss and John Panza have spent years building a sound that is hard to put in one box, and this track is another good example of that.
The track is heavy, noisy and quite tense, but there is more going on than just a wall of sound. The song deals with pressure, control and the damage caused by systems that keep asking people to accept the same old answers. The repeated idea of justice being done becomes more uncomfortable as the track moves on. It does not sound like a simple victory. There is still anger underneath it.
Arms & Armour keep things rough which works well here. The drums are excellent and the extra noise gives the track a strange push. Lauren has a strong and raw voice that sits right in the middle of all that sound. It is not polished and that is one of the best things about the track.
There is also a good sense of patience in this track. The band does not rush to throw every idea into the first minute. Instead, the repetition slowly builds the pressure, while the rough production keeps the track from becoming too clean or safe. This is a great listen for anyone who likes industrial, doom, noise rock and darker post-punk. Arms & Armour have made something raw and personal, with enough space in the sound for the meaningful lyrics.
