Tough Old Bird released their new single “Shape Of Our Love” as part of a steady run of songs this summer and it shows a small shift in their sound without losing what made them work before. The track moves a bit away from pure indie folk and brings in a more electric, indie rock touch. It still sounds like them, just a little fuller. The production is professional and smooth. Everything sits in the right place and it’s easy on the ear from the start.
The vocals are soft. The melodies are simple but really stick. There’s something about how they sit on top of the instruments that just works. The lyrics are honest and personal, about the idea of looking back at life and the small things we leave behind.
The atmosphere is warm. That’s probably the best way to describe it. It feels lived-in, like a place with history, which fits the story behind the song. You can hear that in the way the instruments are layered. The instrumentation is rich but never too much and it blends well with the vocals. Some moments stand out more than others, but nothing really tries to take over.
We liked listening to this band’s music, especially this single. The quality is great, both in how it sounds and how it’s put together. This release shows where the band is going next and we’re looking forward to hearing more from them soon.
ABOUT THE BAND:
Tough Old Bird was formed by songwriting brothers Matthew and Nathan Corrigan in a remote corner of rural Western New York. The brothers grew up surrounded by music, in a tiny house in the woods that was heated by woodstove and insulated with stacks of paperback books.
After releasing their first full-length album, ‘Gambling Days’ in 2016, Tough Old Bird spent years on the road as an acoustic duo, releasing multiple albums and EPs before expanding to its current four-piece lineup, with Brendan O’Shea on bass and Ricky Bechard on drums.
Currently based in Buffalo, NY, the scope of the band’s sound has widened to encompass modern folk music and indie rock, influenced as much by 90s alternative and 60s roots-rock as by traditional folk music and classic country.
