Interview With Lillian Leadbetter

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: I grew up in a dreamy but isolated area in Vermont. I spent most of my time playing outside, talking to the trees and observing the patterns and relationships of nature. My lyrical perspective and my chosen instrumentation are reflective of that intimate and delicate soundscape of nature and a desire to exist within it.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Lillian Leadbetter”?

A: My dream is to connect with a wider community of people who feel an emotional resonance with the world that exists within each song. When I find an artist I love, I trust them to guide me through an emotion, a space or a realization. I want to provide the space that allows others to do the same. We are all growing, this is a place where you have permission to grow.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: I am so taken with Olivia Barton. Her ruthlessly honest and relatable lyrics and intimate delivery had me unabashedly weeping on the airplane on my last long haul flight. I find inspiration through processing my own feelings and experiences, through journaling, connecting with trusted friends and self reflection. Musical work that takes me to, and over, the edge of a much needed emotional breakthrough is invaluable to me.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Untethered Alchemy.”?

A: “Untethered Alchemy” is a meditation on manifestation and the magical power of transformation. The lyrics explore the duality of the limitless and unforeseen possibility of life and the heartbreaking reality of choice and the promise of time.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: Awakening

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Untethered Alchemy”?

A: On the first couple attempts, the feel I wanted was just not translating into the recording. It was with our third day in the studio for this record that my producer stealthily set up a microphone while I was running the tune and hit record. That was the track we kept!

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: In my music I strive to create a shared experience, permission to imagine and explore.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: Adrianne Lenker is an artist who I deeply admire. Adrianne is remarkably talented in crafting an immersive world with lyrics that tickle my brain and a raw delivery that plunders my emotional heart!

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: Preserve your peace and never value anyone’s advice above your own intuition. Ask yourself what you want your life to feel like and then reverse engineer it from there. You define your own success and you are the person that will have to live with your decisions, not the person giving you advice.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: The part of you that you silenced is most likely the part that people want to listen to.
