Interview With mug

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

Amy and Duna: We all had very different childhoods, but regardless of out cultural backgrounds and differences, music was a common thing for us and was very present within our individual families. We all loved it so much that we decided to study it further which led us all to meeting at the same university

Isaac: I had guitar lessons when I was in primary school, but I was so bad my teacher convinced me to quit. – I really got into music when I became a teenager. I didn’t have the best experience during secondary school, so I found solace in music (as many people do). I took drum lessons – luckily with a more patient teacher – and taught myself how to play guitar/ bass and how to write songs. Music has since became an integral part of my life and identity.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “mug”?

A: Our plan is to keep at it! We have so much music we want to share with the world, in order to get it to the ears of new fans we’ll be promoting ourselves across social media and playing as many gigs as we can. With persistence and time, we believe staying true to who we are and what we stand for will be the driving force for attracting potential new fans.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: I’d say the most inspiring artist right now is probably Cameron Winter/ Geese. They’re really proving that you can be experimental with music and it pays off. A lot of their songwriting influences ours.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “down.”?

A: The main message of down is reconsidering your situation when someone isn’t treating you right. It’s quite confrontational in the sense that you’re confronting your emotions, and figuring out what the best thing to do would be

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: Mug-Gaze

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “down”?

A: Distance as we all live in different towns. We had to record this song all at home.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: The main message we are trying to send is that its okay to not have anything figure out, even as a young adult, that its okay to make mistakes, to learn from them, to be angry, happy, confused and lost. There is no fault in trying, and it doesn’t make you less worth it not knowing what you want or what you want to achieve. Not having immediate results when you are on your 20’s doesn’t mean you are late, in fact you have just started understanding and being conscious about life and its never too late to start or try anything, you are not late.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: The shags

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: It’s going to be tough work, it can be quite challenging at times emotionally and economically, but at the end of the day, once you get what you want, it’s very satifying. Be ready to make personal sacrifices

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

Duna – Just keep going until it’s done

Charlie – invest in Logan Paul’s cryptozoo

Isaac – Don’t be so hesitant to put your music out. Bad art is still infinitely more valuable than none at all.

Amy – Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and try new things. Enjoy the journey and all the lessons that come with it.
