Interview With The K.I.J Experience

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: I was born and raised in a South Wales Valleys town called Aberdare. I’ve been a drummer / singer songwriter since I was a kid. My father was a drummer in the 60s, 70s & 80s so I wanted to follow in his footsteps. Music was always played in our house so I grew up listening to a lot of pop music / soul & RnB & a little jazz. This gave me a solid foundation when it came to making beats and melodies.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “The K.I.J Experience”?

A: Since 2023 I’ve been growing a fanbase on Bandcamp. I’ve recently started collaborating with publishing and promotions which has helped my music engage and connect with new listeners. My message / mandate is ‘Listen Enjoy & Share’ so come join me on my musical journey.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: The most inspiring artist for me at the moment is probably Jack White. He’s on another level. My musical heroes are bands like The Beatles, The Stone Roses, The Who, The Kinks & The Small Faces. I’m mainly inspired by working class people, their conversations, and hearing new phrases / buzzwords inspire me to write songs.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Best Friend.”?

A: The song originally started out as a homage to sandwich fillings which then gave me inspiration to write a love song not just about food but about finding that person who compliments you. Take a listen to the song and find your own interpretation.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: Layered

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Best Friend”?

A: Challenges are always embraced and resolved. I try and ensure every song I produce has some new sounds or production technique on it. Inspiration can take the song in new directions as it did with the middle 8 on Best Friend.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: I write songs about Love, Death, Escapism, and everything else in between. I do a lot of self reflecting in my song writing which I hope connects with the listener.m and they realise they are not alone in  celebrating their individuality.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: Ian Brown – Alive / George Harrison RIP

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: Believe in what you do and stay beautiful. Stay focused and remain tenacious. Don’t feed the beast. Be careful out there & live your dream.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Don’t procrastinate. Seize the day. Live everyday as if it’s your last. Keep on keeping on.
