New Interview With no ordinary fish

Q: Welcome back! How does it feel to be releasing new music again?

A: Brilliant! This is the third single we’ve released in 2025 and we’ve just been in the studio recording another three.  We’re back on track and the momentum is building …

Q: Your new single is called “I Wonder”. What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear that phrase?

A: Err, thinking “Hmmm….?”  Alternatively, the wonder of the universe, science, love, etc.

Q: Is there a specific lyric from this track that you hope listeners really sit with? What’s the story behind that line?

A: There are a couple:  “I watched you talk with her, you seemed so debonair, and I wonder, just what’s going on?” And the resolve: “I’m the best you ever had”.  It’s all about tension and release.  The setup involves emotional uncertainty and the turnaround is self-empowerment.

Q: Your music often blends retro sounds with modern touches. Do you ever feel pulled between honoring the past and chasing something new?

A: It just happens naturally really, we don’t overthink it.  We are a product of our past and present playlists and we are all about serving the song.

Q: What’s one sound, instrument, or effect you’ve been dying to sneak into a song but haven’t found the right moment for, yet?

A:  Stu has a trumpet idea for one of our newest songs so watch this space!

Q: How did the writing and recording process for this track compare to your previous releases? Did anything surprise you?

A: We recorded it at home with an engineer in one day and then took our time over the various takes and tweaks.  What surprised us the most is that Rich knocked out his rhythm and lead guitar parts in no time at all ‘cos he is a slick and practised pro!

Q: Are there any specific musical or other influences that helped shape the sound or theme of this song?

A: The song starts and ends with ambient, cocktail bar background sounds.  Debbie was influenced by the similar additions on the opening track Une Nuit a Paris on 10cc’s 1975 Original Soundtrack album.

Q: As a band, you’ve been through a lot together, line-up changes, health challenges, and creative shifts. Do you feel “I Wonder” reflects where you are emotionally or musically right now?

A: “I wonder” is one of a clutch of songs we are releasing this year which have a slower tempo and are more considered.  That said, we also have a new spring in our step and some songs with higher energy reflecting our new lineup – especially in the dynamism and drive provided by Joe on drums.

Q: Looking five years ahead: What would a dream ‘No Ordinary Fish’ project look like, maybe outside of traditional albums and singles?

A: Forming a Supergroup with Kevin Parker on keyboards, Julian Lloyd-Webber playing cello, Stevie Wonder on harmonica, Donny McCaslin on saxophone and Brian May playing a twin lead solo with Rich!

Joking aside, collaborating with others is always enjoyable and we will see what the future brings in this regard.

Q: What does success look like for No Ordinary Fish in this new chapter? Is it numbers, moments, connections… or something else entirely?

A: We’d love to play and host events at bigger venues as well as perform at the best festivals.  Making some memorable videos is another ambition.

And then … moving into our own purpose-built, “no ordinary” mansion replete with studios, swimming pool, hot tub, tennis court, tequila bar (for Stu) all off the back of our next few multi-platinum albums!!
