Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?
A: “So I’ve been making music for 9 years now but I always had it involved in my life. I was exposed to many different genres through my different family members. They definitely all had very different tastes and I think because of that I was able to develop an appreciation for it while also developing my own personal prefrences. I ended up gravitating towards Hip-Hop early on since it combined many different genres into something entirely new and fresh which I loved. Then once I started making music it really branched off beautifully into different places and I think that’s allowed me to slowly develop my own sound and style.”
Q: Can you describe the musical style of Anthony Church in three words?
A: “I’d say my style is primarily centered around melodic elements. Primarily I aim to start any idea with a piano, guitar or another instrument that can build a good solid base. From there I’m able to generate the remainder of the song and it makes the process a lot easier. My biggest goal is to bring out as much emotion as possible and I’ve always felt that the melody is the driving force behind that.”
Q: How do you stay connected with your fans, and what role do they play in shaping your musical journey?
A: “I primarily tend to reach people the most via Instagram and YouTube. I feel that’s where my closest supporters are tuning in and I’ve been able to create a lot of awesome content to keep them engaged and interested. The possibilities to connect with your audience today are nearly endless so recently I’ve really been trying out a lot of methods in order to put my best foot forward and create the most authentic experience around my music. I hope I can keep crafting cool experiences for people moving forward.”
Q: You have just released your new album, ‘When Loves The Motive’. Is there a story behind it?
A: “The title itself was originally intended for an R&B EP I was planning to put together in 2021 that was going to feature some of my close collaborators, mostly singers. It just didn’t come together mostly since it was difficult to pull people away from their prior commitments. So I decided to apply the title to a full Instrumental project centered around the concept of love and why it’s so important in our lives. To me these 10 tracks represent the sound of what it feels like to have someone or something you love involved in your journey and what finding that feeling can do for you. It’s a breath of fresh air but it can also come with many different emotions like fear, nerves and even a sense of wonder. These beats are my take on that kind of energy.
Q: What is your favorite track from the album and why?
A: I really like “Solar Shores” mostly for the marriage of the sounds. I feel it isn’t overly complicated but hits in all the right spots. It has a lot of replay value so I hope people can enjoy it especially within the context of the album.”
Q: Can you walk us through the creative process of producing the album, “When Loves The Motive”?
A: “Like a lot of previous projects I’ve done it is a very random sequence of events. Most of the time I’ll sit down and evaluate a huge group of ideas I’ve made in the last several months and see which ones, if any, can fit the theme of the project I’m working on. This one was no different and a lot of that process took place in 2023. I’d say by the top of 2024 I had this full album picked out and from there it was all about planning the release strategy. I like to give myself a lot of prep time on the backend side of things so the music itself is usually the easiest part. I feel overall that creating this album was pretty seamless.”
Q: What has been the most memorable concert or performance for Anthony Church so far?
A: “I actually have never performed live but it is something that could be a possibility in the future. As of now I have nothing planned but never say never.”
Q: Reflecting on your body of work, each song holding its unique significance, could you share a particular track that stands out to you personally? What makes that specific tune special, and why does it hold a place of pride in your musical journey?
A: “I don’t get too close to any of my music as I don’t really listen to it after it’s out but for this album I think “Real Home” is a special one. The emotion it captures in its style and the theme behind the title being that you find your real home with the person you love, I feel that has so much heart to it. Everyone can relate to that concept in some kind of way and that’s a big reason I chose that track to be the first single as well.”
Q: Exploring the diverse creative processes within the music industry is always fascinating. Could you provide insight into Anthony Church’s unique approach to crafting music? From the initial spark of an idea to the finished song, how do you navigate the creative journey and bring its musical concepts to life?
A: “Like some of the other instances I feel the happy accidents help lead the process most of the time. I don’t usually sit down and have any specific ideas in mind. I tend to start simple and let the music guide itself. The more I lean into that the better the end result usually is as opposed to me trying to force something to happen.”
Q: As we wrap up our conversation, looking ahead, what aspirations or dreams do you have for Anthony Church, and what message would you like to share with your fans as they continue to accompany you on this musical journey?
A: “My main goal is to just keep doing this as long as possible and keep being creative. Finding different ways to leave an impact is what drives me to keep going. To any supporters I would say I truly appreciate them for taking time to consume anything I’m putting out into the world.”
