Album: Luke O’Hanlon – The River Only Runs One Way

Luke O’Hanlon’s third album, “The River Only Runs One Way” feels like a personal journal set to music. It’s raw, emotional and deep. Known for his work in the Liverpool music scene, Luke takes a big step forward here, writing, recording and producing the entire album by himself and that’s truly impressive for this solo artist. That alone makes it special, but what really hits is how honest and moving the songs are.

The album opens with “Alcohol and Sodium” and it couldn’t be a better introduction. The lyrics are thoughtful, the vocals are powerful and the overall feel pulls you right in. It sets the tone for a journey that’s full of emotion and reflection. Songs like “Stevie” and “Einstein’s Twin” follow with heartfelt melodies and lyrics that feel like they come from real life struggles and memories. Luke’s voice carries so much feeling that it’s hard not to get swept up in it.

The title track, “The River Only Flows One Way” stands out with its clean production and great guitar work. It’s catchy, but also deep in its message, a beautiful balance that’s hard to pull off. From there, the album continues to impress, staying consistent in quality and emotion.

One of my favorite tracks is “Cold Black Stone”. It’s gentle, honest and has a melody that sticks with you. I found myself replaying it without even realizing. And then there’s the closer, “Middle Fingers Held High” a song that feels like a final release. It’s powerful, emotional and delivered with sincerity.

What makes this album shine is how real it feels. There’s no polish for the sake of radio. No unnecessary bells and whistles. It’s just one artist telling his story, his way and that’s what makes it so beautiful. We absolutely loved this album. It’s the kind of music that stays with you after it ends. Luke O’Hanlon has a way of making even the smallest moment feel important and that’s a rare gift. This album is a quiet masterpiece and we can’t wait to hear what he does next.
