Interview With Scarhop

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: I am David also known as Scarhop. I am a Spanish/Venezuelan rapper, actor and producer based between Madrid, Spain and London, United Kingdom.

Music impacted my childhood because it helped me survive bullying during school.

Hip Hop is a source of empowerment and it was created to fight racism or abuse of power from authorities but in my case I was struggling against the abuse of teachers and students as a neurodivergent immigrant in Europe, so hip hop gave me the strength and confidence to not give up in life.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Scarhop”?

A: My plan is to keep being consistent and right now I am networking with online communities that will help me grow my fan base. Shout out to Sancri Radio Show and Dis Is Hip Hop from America. Respect to Bluey Bluetooth and DJ AG from United Kingdom.

They are recently supporting my content on social media, and I can see a good future working with them.

My message to anyone who will discover me is to enjoy the ride, and feel the flow of my work, this is something that you must experience with honest emotions then feel free to appreciate the message behind my lyrics.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: Right now I am inspired with the work of Kendrick Lamar and Doechii. But I also like artists from the UK like Dave or Little Simz.

In the Hispanic community, I appreciate the work of my sister Mariana Salazar but also Kali Uchis and other artists like Residente, from Calle 13.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Josefina.”?

A: The song is a tribute to my grandmother Josefina who passed away a couple of years ago, rest in peace Josefina Rodriguez Clemente.

This is a Reggaeton song but it’s not the usual style where lyrics are focused on the objectification of women, I talk about the life of a single mother that survived a dangerous country like Venezuela and dedicated her entire life to take care of the family.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: My sound described in one word is “motivation”

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Josefina”?

A: Yes, I made the song few days after my grandmother Josefina passed away and while it was challenging due to the emotional content of it, I was also inspired to create a beautiful song dedicated to a love one.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: My message are personal stories about myself and the world, my own experiences and my point of view towards the past and current worldwide events, I talk about different topics like immigration, personal frustrations, rejection, mental health, addiction and social justice.

My goal as an artist is to leave the earth with an artistic legacy as a Latino immigrant. I want to provide my family wealth so we can keep creating music, literature and art.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: Kendrick Lamar, Doechii, Eminem, Tupac, Bob Marley, Canserbero, Amy Winehouse, Linkin Park and Nirvana.

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: Never give up and make sure that you collaborate with a platform that can bring you a real audience.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: Don’t overthink about rejection, keep focused on yourself and never give up no matter what.
