Interview With The Divys

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?A: William & Kliffee: Watching MTV (when music videos were still a thing!) really inspired us to want to be in a band.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “The Divys”?

A: William: Growing a fan base takes time, and we are so grateful for every new fan we get.  I think our message would be this:  Music is a universal language, something that can bring vastly different types of people together.  We’re not saying music, let alone our music will bring world peace, but wouldn’t it be great if it could?

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: William tends to listen to artists he listened to for years – Annie Lennox, Alison Moyet, The Pet Shop Boys.  It’s like when I go out to eat and always order the same food.  My music is like comfort food.  I find inspiration from so many different places – the news, TV, a movie, thinking about past relationships.  I tend to get inspired by the darker things in life, like hurt and heartache.

Kliffee is inspired by everything from late 50’s rock ‘n roll music to early 90’s rock sprinkled with classical and jazz.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “A Thousand Christmas Trees.”?

A: William:It’s a song about loss and hope.  The protagonist, the one who’s telling their story, is basically saying, Even though I’m no longer here physically, I still am here.  If you look around, you’ll see me in the snow, in the twinkling lights on the trees, in the children’s laughter.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: William: Poptastic!

A: Kliffee: FutuRetro!

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “A Thousand Christmas Trees”?

A: William:  Writing a Christmas song was so foreign to me, something that I avoided for a long time.  There are so many great Holiday songs out there, too many to list, so it was a bit intimidating.

A: Kliffee: I felt it came together quite quickly once William got his groove.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: William:  For me, the message changes by the song.  It’s whatever inspired the song.  Our newest song that will be our first release of 2025 was inspired by an Indie movie I streamed called, I Miss You When I See You.  I was so inspired, we decided to name the song that, too.  As for our goals, I guess they’re to keep writing and recording, and growing our fan base.

A: Kliffee: Keep it simple and enjoy life and music without over thinking too much.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: William: Mine would be Dead Or Alive!

You Spin Me Round was such an inspirational song, getting me interested in keyboards and drum machines, basically electronic dance music.

A: Kliffee: Mine would be for The Divys to co-write and record a song with Boy George and Johnny Lydon.

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: William:  I have absolutely no idea!  We’re trying to figure it all out ourselves.  One thing I can say is this:  Celebrate each and every victory. Getting added to a playlist, getting a new like or follow – they may seem like small achievements, but they all add up.

A: Kliffee: Study musical theory, try to enjoy as many styles of music as possible and practice, practice, practice!

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: William & Kliffee: Live in the moment and enjoy where you are, because you are exactly where you’re supposed to be.
