Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?
A: Yes. I was obsessed with music early on. I think being a young 5 year old and hearing music, songs, verses, and the structure of it all Is very entrancing. It certainly got my attention. My dad is really into the classic rock groups like Van Halen, Kiss, Motley Cru. I grew to like those bands as well; I’m actually still a huge Green Day fan. But I love being on the pop music band wagon these days.
Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Mexx Heart”?
A: That I only hope to make you proud, and to be involved in my fan base. And I hope when I meet some of you, that you’ve been loving the journey and the music. This as much my journey as it yours.
Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?
A: These days it’s Chappell Roan. I truly don’t get hows she’s been demonized lately when all she’s done is stand up for herself and set boundaries. I guess when being a celebrity has coincided with having your privacy invaded, we just get used to that. I mean, look at Taylor Swift. People love to follow her everywhere, speculate on her relationships, and everything about her. But she’s been in the industry for so long she just keeps rolling and living her life. Hell, I’m not even that famous and some people have found out where my boyfriend works and have shown up to ask about me. I think that’s absolutely crazy. Like, yes we want recognition and to make music and to put on concerts, but we should also be allowed to go in public without being harassed and mobbed. Chappell is defining how she wants to be treated and I think that’s so respectable. I love her for it. I hope more celebrities, new and experienced, stand up for themselves.
Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the song, “Deceptive Intention.”?
A: The inspiration behind “deceptive intentions” directly follows the storyline of the namesake film, “Deceptive Intentions” by Robert L Parker. “Deceptive Intentions” was written from the perspective of Vanessa, the main character. Living in a world of chaos and trying to find your place in the world while also not being able to trust anyone other than yourself.
Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?
A: Alt-Pop. It’s on the Pop spectrum but it’s not some dancey upbeat song you’d hear in the Barbie Movie. It’s more like the 80’s-90’s Dark Fantasy theme. But it doesn’t stray so far away that it can be considered fully Alternative.
Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “Deceptive Intention”?
A: A few songwriting blocks happened. I did consult with a producer while writing. None of the ideas were used in the end, having outside critique helped complete the song, so I’m grateful for that.
Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?
A: I’m a storyteller. Most if not all my music has been a story of an event in my life or just trying to communicate my emotions as I’m adjusting to it. An album like “Paper House” is an example of a story that I hope to make more of. I’ve lived many lives in the years following the release of that album and I can’t wait to share those stories as well!
Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)
A: oh wow. I actually have 2. Miley Cyrus is one, I grew up watching her on TV and she inspired me to even chase music in the first place. She was my first female role model, and Iive only ever loved her more, if that were possible. I’ve never not listened to anything she’s put out. I’d love to co-write and feature on a track with her.
The 2nd is Chappell Roan, of course. Once I discovered her music, I was instantly in love with it, and inspired. I was a songwriter first, so I did actually write a song in her style that I hope I can show her, cuz my goal is to have her cut it. Please hit me up Chappell! I’d love to show you!
Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?
A: Don’t ever give up. If it’s something that you truly, truly want, you HAVE to work at it. Even if it means taking up a day job and doing it on the side. Hard work, networking, and being authentic WILL pay off. Just keep going at it and you can do it.
Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?
A: That I’d stay involved, make the videos I planned on making, and keep going. I let a lot of people tell me what to do and how to do it but I only broke through when I started taking control. Things will only go your way if YOU call the shots. And don’t let anyone ever tell you’re not good enough or you need A, B, and C in order to make it. There’s a million As Bs and Cs and those As Bs and Cs think they’re the best out there. But you don’t need them. You just need the right A, the right B, and the right C, to believe in you and stand in your corner. Don’t tolerate disrespect from someone just because they’re higher up than you or because they’ve written more songs or know more people. I guarantee as long as someone’s funneling money towards them, they have a job. Keep any and all GOOD (big emphasis on good) people close to you no matter how far you. You’ll appreciate it in the long run.
