Interview With Mila Ziska

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how your childhood impacted your musical direction?

A: I grew up in a family of folk musicians and dancers, and so traditional music was very much the soundtrack of my early years.

Q: How are you planning on growing your fan base and sharing your music with the world? What message do you have for anyone who is about to discover “Mila Ziska”?

A: I try to make music that feels like running away to the forest… I like to think that in my music, people can find a little moment to daydream and escape everyday life.

Q: Who is the most inspiring artist for you right now? And where do you find inspiration for making music?

A: I listen to a lot of instrumental folk music, as that is what I grew up on. The inspiration for my music mainly comes from mother nature, and all of her beauty and magic. Some of my personal favourite artists right now would be Lizzy McAlpine and The National Parks.

Q: Can you tell us about the story or message behind the EP, “A Long Way To Go.”?

A: I wanted to pay tribute to the weird and wonderful experience of growing up. The whole EP basically is a musical coming of age story touching on a bunch of different feelings and experiences in the process. The message behind ‘A Long Way To Go’ would be how this scary and isolating process of becoming your own person, and discovering who you really are, is something we all go though. And that it is okay to get lost along the way.

Q: How would you describe your sound in one word for potential listeners?

A: Oh my, just one word is really hard! I’ll go with ‘heartfelt’.

Q: Did you face any challenges while writing or recording “A Long Way To Go”?

A: There is one song on this EP called ‘Forget Me Not’, that I wrote about my grandmas battle with Alzheimer’s. This was a very heavy topic for me to tackle in my songwriting, and it wasn’t always easy to put all of my feelings about it into a 3 minute long song. But I did it to hopefully make others with a loved one battling Alzheimer’s feel heard and understood.

Q: What is the message of your music? And what are your goals as an artist?

A: Through my music, I want to give people a place that they can escape to. Somewhere that is just theirs. And I try to put this element of comfort and escapism into the songs that I write.

Q: Who is your dream artist to collaborate with? (dead or alive)

A: Oh, there is so many! If I have to chose, it would have to be Glen Hansard. I grew up listening to his music and his honest and raw writing style has inspired me greatly.

Q: What is your advice for people interested in pursuing music as a career or for those trying to enter the industry?

A: Comparison really is the thief of joy. It is important to remember that there is no blueprint for the ‘right’ way of doing things, writing songs or becoming an artist. Follow your own path and stay true to who you are and to your vision.

Q: If you could go back in time and give a younger you some words of wisdom, what would they be?

A: ‘It will be alright’
