Conversation With Chizlonies the Lord

Q: Hey, can you tell us a bit about where you come from, and what made you want to start a career in music?

A: I’m from the south suburbs of Chicago (Olympia Fields) and I’m a first-generation Nigerian-American. I don’t even remember what made me want to start making music back in high school – just wanting to make something cool and mimic my favorite artists.

Q: Did you have any formal training, or are you self-taught?

A: I’m self-taught, I have no formal training!

Q: Who were your first and strongest musical influences?

A: Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Wale, Lil Wayne, Kendrick

Q: You have just released your new single, ‘ Bad Day’. Is there a story behind it?

A: There isn’t a particular story but it’s more so me venting about (or complaining about, depending on how you look at it) a general bad day and depressive periods that I think everyone has. Feelings of self-hate and spiraling sadness. Sometimes you need help and sometimes you don’t get that help and have to help yourself.

Q: Can we expect a new EP or even an album from you in the near future?

A: I’m not sure if I’m going to drop an EP – I think I want to make sure every song I drop is heard so I will probably drop singles for the foreseeable future.

Q: What do you feel are the key elements in your music that should resonate with listeners, and how would you personally describe your sound?

A: I would describe my sound as eclectic, I think I have a variety of different sounding songs but all the songs have bars that I hope resonate.

Q: Do you feel that your music is giving you back just as much fulfillment as the amount of work you are putting into it, or are you expecting something more?

A: I guess at the core of things, I really make music to make myself happy and to express myself. So I get a good amount of fulfillment when I make something and I can enjoy it forever. But I do want other people to hear it and enjoy it too! So I’m expecting that to happen eventually if I continue to drop consistently.

Q: Could you describe your creative processes? How do usually start, and go about shaping ideas into a completed song?

A: I usually find a beat and freestyle flows to the beat to come up with the flow of the verse or the flow of the hook. Most of the time it’s gibberish and humming and then I put words to it later. At least that’s how I have been making songs within the last year and half. I think my creative process was a little different before that but I honestly can’t even remember what it was.

Q: What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to endure in your life or music career so far?

A: Ummm probably taking the bar exam is the hardest thing I’ve ever done – it’s a hard exam, at least to me and probably the majority of other takers.

Q: On the contrary, what would you consider a successful, proud or significant point in your life or music career so far?

A: I recently broke 20k streams on Bad Day so I’m really proud of that and I’m glad so many people are listening! And I am just proud to be making music consistently and releasing it consistently.
