Castle De Crux comprises Elysia De Crux and Exor Magus De Crux. They blend a clever mix of lived experiences, current global issues, and the consequential effects on human society and its mental health. The duo’s sound is darkly alternative, accompanied by striking imagery and video. While Castle De Crux’s lyrical topics can be deadly serious at times, the band tempers this with a wicked sense of humour, striking a fine balance between dark morbidity, glamour and fun.
The duo want to present meaningful music that’s inspired by their own lived experiences and different aspects of life in the world today. A huge part of that is how people suffer mentally. In so many ways, illnesses of the mind seem to be affecting more people these days. The stories they want to tell through our music are born of what we hope is some gained wisdom after surviving dark mental times of our own. Within the world of Castle De Crux, Elysia and Exor have created ‘The Hidden Realm’. It’s a metaphoric place, representing the human psyche in both the negative and positive. A ‘Castle’ of darkness and light, it’s like a non-corporeal explorable structure whose form can change according to a person’s state of mind and feelings at any given time. It serves as a kind of backdrop made of imagination for those songs we’ve created that talk about mental deterioration and hope, recovery and survival.
The Castle being a place of light and darkness can appear of peaceful contentment or stress and deep anxiety; it represents both of those states of mind. At times, it can be a terrifying environment, deep within the bowels of the Castle where one’s struggle for mental recovery is a huge challenge. It may seem as though there is no way out of never-ending dark corridors and worse, falling into dark and dank dungeons. However, in the Castle’s uppermost levels, it can also be very beautiful with areas of peaceful contentment and happy gardens and views of beauty and thriving life.
Elysia shares through her powerful vocal and lyrics how harrowing experiences growing up led to depression and eating disorders and other problems. Thankfully she has now recovered though growing up during an era not so long ago that didn’t acknowledge autism, especially in girls, made her recovery from mental problems a tougher path, but she has survived. She testifies of hope and recovery for others going through similar ordeals. These topics become apparent when you listen closely to the seemingly abstract lyrics of songs on the Castle De Crux EP “Demons We Create”
Exor Magus originally established ‘Exor’s Magicvision Productions’ to support the band Jokerbats in producing their ground-breaking music videos. Exor recently founded Exor Records, producing, composing, writing, and arranging music for Castle De Crux. As a songwriter, producer, video director, and visual artist, his vision is something of a global thing, of humaity and the world at large. It’s a vision that looks at the human condition, human relations with each other, and this fragile rock on which we live. With a broad perspective of things both ancient and modern, he asks, via words, music, and visuals, how and why humans have come to what they are in the present day. He supports and creates work that considers the progress of humans and their effect on everything. Not discounting the good things, it is invariably the various man-made “monsters” that result. The Castle De Crux single “So Many Monsters” is a straight-forward, fun yet also quite serious and relevant play on this theme.
Exor seems to bring a magical touch to various creative projects, which is quite fitting, as his name suggests. He is indeed, at times, a true musical “Magus.”. Castle De Crux testify that recovery from problems that damage mental well-being in both the personal and global aspect is ALWAYS worth the struggle in getting there! Elysia and Exor hope that their experiences told through music and visuals can inspire and encourage others to keep going and to believe there is a way out.
