Jovial Animal are an independent alt rock band with a universal purpose that delivers thought-provoking lyrics and creative instrumental arrangements with an enduring, authentic and expressive message. The name, which prophetically spells the same when translated into other Latin languages, embodies the bacchanalian joy and parasitical worry innate to the human experience. With a Brazilian soul and a global voice, their debut self-titled album lays a promising foundation for the change they aspire to bring to life in the coming years—a journey they have bravely and harmoniously begun. The band was founded by MikaelBelchior, an adventurous and passionate singer-songwriter, and RicardoBocci, a forward-thinking music producer and arranger. Mikael, brought up in SãoPaulo by an English mother (teacher) and a Brazilian father (singer/composer Belchior), moved to the UK after completing British schooling in Brazil. Following his graduation and a master’s degree from universities in England, Mikael returned to Brazil and initially worked in banking. However, it did not take long for him to turn to singing and songwriting as a means to nurture his creativity, freedom of spirit, and drive for social change. Ricardo, an open-minded musical wizard, has been immersed in music since his teenage years, studying and teaching the craft. The spark for JovialAnimal ignited when Mikael and Ricardo first met, with Ricardo instinctively playing the piano as Mikaelsang his lyrics a cappella. Their complementary skills and creative synergy transformed music lessons into jam sessions and festive night caps, leading to the birth of JovialAnimal. After a decade of collaboration and experimentation, the duo, along with a handpicked crew of talented musician friends, recorded their debut album. This album, a collection of songs created since their meeting in 2012, showcases their evolution and distinct sound. Initially released informally on YouTube, these songs have now been formally recorded, produced and complemented with a handful of new tracks for the JovialAnimal debut – certainly not one to miss out on.
